Exercising on Your Period

Exercise is so good for you that it may be hard to believe that it’s actually not the best thing for you during your period — particularly intense exercise. It turns out that a study of professional female athletes found they were more likely to experience injuries during their periods.

You're also more likely to strain your adrenal glands — the ones that help to regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress, and other vital functions. So when these are injured, you’re more prone to exhaustion. Too much intense exercise is also a leading cause of irregular cycles, and can cause your period to stop altogether.

You don’t have to take off your entire cycle, though. Incorporate gentle yoga, stretching, and walking to keep your body moving without the risk.
